Donald Glover has confirmed Malia Obama is in the writers’ room for his new Amazon series. The Atlanta Emmy winner told Vanity Fair that Obama is “an incredibly talented person,” adding, “She’s really focused and she works really hard.”
“I have a feeling that she’s just someone who’s going to have really good things soon,” Glover said. “Your writing style is great.”
Stephen Glover, Donald’s brother and frequent collaborator, also develops the Obama-backed Amazon series and said of the young talent, “Donald always says that perspective is important, and people with different perspectives are important for a writer’s room. And sure, [Malia] definitely has a unique perspective on everything. So we wanted to hear their stories and let them work with us. Hearing their stories and engaging with them really gave us a lot of good ideas.”
Donald Glover signed an eight-figure overall deal with Amazon Studios in February 2021. Sources told Variety at the time that Malia Obama was joining the writers’ room on a Glover project with playwright Janine Nabers, but only now has Obama’s involvement been confirmed. The series is reportedly about a “Beyonce-like character.” Nabers is known for her work on Watchmen, Away and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.
“Atlanta” has just returned to FX for its long-delayed third season. Variety critic Daniel D’Addario hailed the new season as “an astounding, breathtaking masterclass” in his glowing review and praised the direct storytelling. “Atlanta” will return in the fall for a fourth and final season.
