It’s been over a year since rumors of Malia Obama’s involvement in one of Donald Glover’s upcoming projects for Amazon first surfaced, and now there’s finally confirmation from the man himself.
At the premiere event of Glover’s Emmy-winning series Atlanta, Season 3, he gave an insight into working with the eldest Obama child.
“She’s just an incredibly talented person,” Glover tells Vanity Fair. “She’s really focused and she works really hard.”
“I feel like she’s just someone who’s going to have really good stuff soon,” he adds. “Your writing style is great.”
Last year, Glover signed a multi-year deal with Amazon Studios to carry out the project. The series, which may be called Hive, is said to focus on a “Beyonce-like character.” Playwright Janine Nabers is also in the writing room, along with Glover’s brother and frequent collaborator Stephen Glover.

“Donald always says perspective is important, and people with different perspectives are important for a writer’s room. And she definitely has a unique perspective on everything,” says Stephen. “So we wanted to hear their stories and let them work with us. Hearing their stories and engaging with them really gave us a lot of good ideas.”
Stephen also reminds us that Malia is just like everyone else – only with a former president for a father. “We can’t make it easy for her just because she is [former] the president’s daughter,” he jokes, before adding, “No, she’s very down to earth and cool. So it’s not a problem at all. She has many good ideas. She’s gorgeous. She’s just a normal person like everyone else.”
At 23, Malia has been building a career in Hollywood for years, having previously worked for the Weinstein Company in 2017. She also served as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s Extant in 2014, followed by HBO’s Girls in 2015.
