The businessman-turned-politician took to his social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday to refute director Chris Columbus' claim that he insisted on appearing in the film in exchange for permission to film at his hotel.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” emphasized Donald Trump. That cameo contributed to the success of the film, but if they felt intimidated or didn't want me, then why did they put me in the film and keep me there for over 30 years? Because I was and am great for the film, that's why! He’s just another Hollywood guy from the past looking for a quick fix to drum up publicity for Trump!”

The former US president claimed that filmmakers begged him to appear in the Christmas classic and he reluctantly agreed because they were “perseverant”. “That little cameo took off like a rocket and the film was a huge hit and still is, especially at Christmas time. “People call me every time it airs,” he added.

In an interview with Business Insider in 2020, Chris Columbus claimed that they paid a filming fee at the Plaza Hotel, but Donald Trump, the then-owner, still insisted that he make a cameo.

“He said, 'You can't use the Plaza unless I'm in the movie,'” the filmmaker said. So we agreed to put him in the film, and when we showed it for the first time, something strange happened: people clapped when Trump appeared on the screen. So I said to my editor, “Leave it in the film. It's a public moment.” But he forced himself to be in the film.”

In this scene, Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, enters the Plaza and Donald Trump tells him how to find the lobby. Donald Trump made numerous appearances in films and television shows in the 1980s and 1990s.
