Former US President Donald Trump’s son Donald Junior testified in New York on Wednesday in the civil fraud trial in which he is accused along with his father, sister Ivanka and brother Eric. The investigation by the New York Attorney General’s Office, led by Prosecutor Letizia James, concerns the family business, the multinational Trump Organization, and alleged illegal activities between 2011 and 2021. Donald Jr. is the first of three children to testify in the next few days Eric and Ivanka’s turn and on Monday it’s Donald Trump’s turn.
According to the indictment, Trump, his three sons and company executives manipulated the valuation of the company’s properties and inflated them by billions of dollars to deceive lenders, insurance brokers and tax authorities in order to obtain better interest rates on bank loans and insurance policies. Donald Jr., the company’s vice president, said he took control of the company starting in 2017, when his father was elected president of the United States, but that he had “little involvement” in the financial matters at issue in the trial. The New York Attorney General’s Office believes that the company earned approximately $250 million from these illegal practices, which it is seeking to recover through this lawsuit. Trump could also be banned from doing business in New York state. This lawsuit is just one of many pending against the potential Republican nominee for the 2024 election.
