Russian expert Gerhard Mangott of the University of Innsbruck revealed at ORF whether a ceasefire in the Ukraine war is in sight.
Russia wants to “radically” reduce its military activities in the region around the Ukrainian capital Kiev. The announcement was made by Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin on Tuesday following the Ukrainian-Russian talks in Istanbul.
Putin’s Hound Takes His Son (14) to War
Military actions in the Chernihiv area must also be significantly reduced. Peace talks lasted about four hours. However, negotiations between Moscow and Kiev turned out to be difficult because the positions differ so much. But now there should have been positive signs in the negotiations.
But how “constructive” can negotiations between Russia and Ukraine really be, or is there even an imminent ceasefire in sight? Russian expert Gerhard Mangott from the University of Innsbruck commented on this very topic in “Zeit im Bild 2”.
“There is no truce”
And Mangott explained early in the interview with Armin Wolf that negotiations between Moscow and Kiev today “have not been a breakthrough.” “There are still significant differences in the details,” said the expert. About the borders of Ukraine. “And there’s no truce either!”
Fighting in Ukraine continues and, according to Mangott, one must wait for Russia’s commitment to reduce military action in Kiev. However, the negotiations were definitely a step forward and updated compared to previous negotiations.
“Other Quality” Conversations
Because the negotiations would no longer take place in Belarus on the border, but in Turkey. “The conversations are of a different quality,” Mangott is right in “ZIB2.” According to the expert, the question now is what security guarantees Ukraine expects.
The Ukrainian delegation recently announced in Istanbul that the cessions of territory to Russia are “unacceptable”. “But Putin will hardly end the war without Crimea, Lugansk and Donetsk, will he?” asked Wolf von Mangott. The expert made it very clear:
“No! He can’t do that. The Crimea issue is resolved for the Russian side anyway. There’s nothing left to negotiate. The status is clear,” explains Mangott. The People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk already recognized Moscow on February 21 within the borders of all provinces.
“It will be long fights”
Russia must occupy all this territory. “There will be protracted fighting and Russia will insist that Ukraine’s borders follow the new line of control in Donbass and stay where they really are, namely in northern Crimea.”
But what’s next in the Ukraine war? “Putin gave up on conquering Kiev?” moderator Wolf asked his guest ZIB2. Mangott: “It could be, but it’s not right. Current decisions to reduce attacks may just be a ruse.
And further: “Russia will also leave troops in Kiev, because otherwise Ukrainian troops could run from Kiev to Donbass to fight the Russians there. So far, this is not a promising prospect that has opened up. , I can’t give hope to anyone, but I urge great realism.”
