Don't tell sister… but the new midwives weren't always so prim and proper! How Natalie Quarry and Renee Bailey starred in more daring roles before becoming students and housemates in the hit BBC drama

In their starched blue aprons and immaculate navy robes, they look every bit like dedicated nurses helping their patients.

But as these photos show, Call The Midwife's two new stars have taken on slightly more daring roles before – appearing in a spandex leotard, thigh-high garters and fishnet tights that would scandalize sister Monica Joan.

Natalie Quarry, 25, and Renee Bailey, 28, play midwifery students and housemates in the hit BBC drama, which is now in its 13th season.

Ms. Quarry is the naive but determined Rosalind Clifford and Ms. Bailey is Joyce Highland, who emigrated from Trinidad to escape a secret past.

The roles are in stark contrast to the actresses' previous jobs. While at university, Ms Quarry – who attended drama school Rose Bruford College – appeared on stage in her underwear in a musical production of the romance fantasy City Of Angels.

In photos on her personal Instagram page, which has 2,500 followers, she is seen posing on a bed in white silk underwear and stockings. She also sang and played the violin throughout the production and later changed into a 1950s-style black pinafore dress.

Elsewhere on her Instagram page, the actress shared pictures of herself with her boyfriend of five years or staring sullenly into the camera with bright purple and green eyeshadow.

After graduating from drama school, Ms Quarry made her television debut in an episode of Doctors, but the actress always had her sights set on Call The Midwife.

She said: “I remember when I left drama school I thought, 'Gosh, I think I'd be good in Call The Midwife.' Maybe I should email them.'

“So episode one is kind of a weird moment where the big head comes full circle for me and I think, 'I'd be good in Call The Midwife'.”

Meanwhile, Ms Bailey made her television debut in 2022 in the six-part BBC Three series Mood, a musical drama about how young women use social media to achieve their dreams.

In an Instagram post, she described the job as a “trial by fire” and showed pictures of her dancing in a spandex leotard, matching fingerless gloves, thigh-high boots and fishnet stockings.

To play the role of rapper Paris, Ms. Bailey had her hair cut short and dyed fluorescent green.
