Authorities were called at around 11:30 a.m. to the Polymer Source research center, which markets itself as a supplier of polymers and biopolymers, on Avro Avenue on Montreal’s West Island.

The man’s death was pronounced on the spot, it said Urgences-santé. Two people were also transported by ambulance, but paramedics were unable to pinpoint the nature or severity of their injuries. A third person refused to be taken to the hospital.

Several firefighters also responded to the scene.

Two inspectors from the Commission for Standards, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) are on site and have secured the site, notably banning all chemical processes.

“Every time a serious accident occurs, CNESST inspectors go to the scene to investigate the accident site and collect information to find out the circumstances of the accident,” said Marie-Claude Normandin, spokeswoman for the CNESSST.

The decision to launch a formal investigation lasting several months will be made in the coming days based on the first information gathered.
