Dozens of people march towards Roxham Road

Dozens of people gathered in Montreal’s La Fontaine Park on Saturday morning to begin a nearly 75-kilometer march towards Montérégie’s Roxham Road. They denounce the closure of this migration route and defend the right to seek asylum in Canada.

Despite the rain, more than a hundred people gathered near the obelisk honoring Charles de Gaulle in Parc La Fontaine on Saturday morning. This is the starting point of a three-day march to denounce the closure of Roxham Road and the recently strengthened Safe Third Countries Agreement by Canada and the United States.

The march was organized by several organizations supporting refugees and asylum seekers, as well as Amnesty International and the Canadian Council for Refugees.

“This march is symbolic because every day we welcome families who have walked for months to get to Canada,” Maryse Poisson, director of social initiatives at Collectif Bienvenue, told the crowd.

The group set off around 10:30 a.m. A press conference at the US border is scheduled to conclude the march late Monday.
