A drag queens show that was supposed to be held at the Sacré-Coeur church in Haute-Côte-Nord is being postponed due to the dissatisfaction of several believers.
The idea of organizing this show caused controversy as soon as the event was announced.
“It is certain that there were a large number of people who raised their hands and said: ‘Listen, we don’t feel very comfortable having an event like this in a church,'” said Bastien Deschênes, President of the Fabrique de Sacré-Cœur.
The faithful even threatened not to return to the church if the show went ahead. For this reason, the Fabrique de Sacré-Coeur asked the Festival du Fjord to find another location for the performances.
The announcement saddened the festival’s organization, which wanted to open minds by bringing drag queens to the region.
“We were very disappointed to learn that in 2023 the Church still lacks openness and that it has not arrived at the same time as we expected,” said Festival du Fjord director Nancy Lamontagne.
The religious organization denies a lack of openness.
“The Church is in a world of openness and consensus, then positivism. We don’t create environments where we start opposing and debating. We don’t want to get involved in that,” said the factory president.
The show, which is bound to cause a stir for good and bad reasons, takes place on September 1st. It will be held in the village arena.
