With the Zurich Classic 2022 we get a change of pace this week.

Instead of the traditional stroke play events where all players compete against each other, this week’s TPC Louisiana sees 160 golfers compete. Eighty teams are starting this week, and some are made up of the biggest names in golf.

Five of the top six players in the world are in the field this week, and two of them have teamed up. Collin Morikawa (No. 2) and Viktor Hovland (No. 5) have by far the lowest combined total in the Official Golf World Ranking, although there are also some impressive teams in the field.

No. 1 player Scottie Scheffler teamed up with Ryan Palmer this week. Palmer has played this event with Jon Rahm for the past several years.

Two other teams stand out in the field, with Billy Horschel (No. 14) working with Sam Burns (No. 11) and Patrick Cantlay (No. 4) working with Xander Schauffele (No. 12).

However, the team to beat based on recent history is a pair of Aussies. Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman won last year’s tournament and are back. Smith is a two-time winner of this event, winning the first year of this format in 2017 with Jonas Blixt.

format

So, here’s how this will work.

The first and third rounds are played as best ball, meaning each player will play each hole as usual. The team takes the best score between the two players and enters it on the scorecard.

The second and fourth rounds are alternately hit, a true form of team golf. This format is pretty simple. One player hits it from the tee and the other hits the second shot and they will keep hitting until the day is over.

After the second round there is a cut. The top 33 teams and ties make up the weekend.

Past Winners

Obviously, teams vary from year to year. There aren’t necessarily any powerhouses at this event.

Blixt and Smith won 2017 with 27-unders. Billy Horschel won the tournament for the second time (he won the Zurich Classic stroke play 13) with Scott Piercy the following year, and then Palmer and Rahm won 19.

After the 20’s were canceled, Leishman and Smith defeated South Africans Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwarzel in a playoff last year.
