According to Ukrainian sources, a conductor of the Kherson Philharmonic was shot dead in his home by Russian soldiers because he refused to cooperate. Yuriy Kerpatenko was “brutally” murdered because he refused “to cooperate with the occupying forces”, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture said on Saturday. The city of Kherson, in southern Ukraine, has been occupied by Russian troops since the beginning of the war.
“categorically declined”
“According to media reports, the occupants and their collaborators of the Philharmonic Orchestra were planning a festive concert in Kherson on the occasion of World Music Day on 1 October,” the ministry said.
With the show, Russian representatives wanted to demonstrate “the supposed ‘restoration of peaceful life’ in Kherson,” he said. However, Kerpatenko “categorically refused” to work with them. The conductor did not hide his attitude and refused to leave the occupied city.
principal theater conductor
Kerpatenko has worked at the Kherson Regional Philharmonic since 2000, and in 2004 he became chief conductor of the Kherson Theater of Music and Drama, named after Mykola Kulish.
