Windows 11 Preview – Windows Insider Program Canary Channel
Microsoft is behind a new preview of Windows 11, build 26016. It offers an important new feature related to printing. It is no longer necessary to download printer drivers.
Windows 11 Build 26016 will be available for a few hours via the CANARY channel of the Windows Insider program and introduces just one new feature. There are likely other undocumented changes that we will only discover after initial testing.
The operating system reveals that ” protected print mode » (Protected Print Mode or PPM), which initiates the transition to printing without a specific driver. It works with MOPRIA certified printers. This eliminates the need to install additional software or drivers, making printing easy regardless of printer brand. This PPM builds on top of the IPP print stack. IPP is the contraction of IInternet PPress Protocol. It is an HTTP-based protocol that supports many authentication methods. Printers are identified using URIs such as ipps://printer.example.com/ipp/print. The IPP supports all common operations that one would expect from a printer. It also supports built-in encryption.

Since this is the Canary channel, the operating system is not recommended for a production PC. For example, Microsoft points out a problem with the update process. This can result in a “download loop” where the build is downloaded multiple times with error 8024200D. There is also a problem with the availability of operating system ISOs. They are not available for some users. An investigation is underway.

Microsoft offers a new icon for the “Diagnose network problems” entry when you right-click the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar. The Phone Link settings page under Settings > Bluetooth & Devices will be renamed to Mobile Devices.
