The death toll in Ukraine reportedly rose to 39 a day after the largest Russian airstrike on the country since the start of the nearly two-year-old conflict.

“Almost 120 towns and villages were affected and hundreds of civilian objects were damaged,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on X-SaturdayThe attack left 159 people injured in Friday's attack, in which Russia fired more than 150 missiles and drones at Ukrainian targets in 18 hours.

In his tweet, Zelensky urged the West to continue helping his country in the now long-running battle.

“Weapons in the hands of Ukrainians are always a means of protecting lives, and every manifestation of Russian terror proves again and again that we cannot postpone helping those who oppose terror,” he said. “Together we must defeat it.”

As Ukraine recovered from the aftermath of the attack, Russian authorities said its military fired dozens of missiles and drones in the southwest of the country on Saturday, killing 14 people, including two children.

Units in the country's Belgorod region foiled “an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region, said a man was killed when a house was hit.

Four people were reportedly treated for injuries, ten private homes were damaged and water supplies were disrupted in the city of Belgorod.

Meanwhile, the number of Russian military casualties – killed and wounded – continued to rise to almost 300 a day compared to last year, the British Ministry of Defense said on Saturday a post on X.

“The increase in daily averages reported by the Ukrainian authorities almost certainly reflects the deterioration of the Russian Armed Forces and its transition to a lower quality, high quantity mass army since the 'partial mobilization' of reservists in September 2022,” the ministry's intelligence agency said Update adds that Russia is expected to need five to 10 years to rebuild the highly trained part of its military units.

“If the number of casualties remains as high as before, by 2025 Russia will have killed and wounded 500,000 military personnel in more than three years of war,” the press conference continued. “This is compared to the Soviet Union’s 70,000 casualties in the nine-year Soviet war in Afghanistan.”
