Former military police major of Mato Grosso do Sul, Sérgio Roberto de Carvalho, is considered one of the world’s largest drug traffickers and is known in Europe as Pablo Escobar Brasileiro. He has been incarcerated in a prison in Belgium called a “resort” since June. Major Carvalho has connections to Santa Catarina, particularly Balneário Camboriú in February, federal police issued search and seizure warrants against a citybased gaucho who served as the international drug lord’s righthand man.

The information about the place where the Brazilian Pablo Escobar is being held comes from Josmar Jozino’s column on Uol. The former police officer was held at a luxury hotel in Budapest, Hungary, after a long period on Interpol’s “red list” and among the world’s most wanted criminals. In June he was deported to Belgium and integrated into the newly built hotel Haren Prison.
The resort’s nickname comes from its infrastructure: the prison unit is modern and technically equipped, according to the columnist. There are gyms, computer labs, walking areas, libraries, medical departments and humanized treatment for prisoners.

The concept may sound strange in Brazil, where the standard of the prison system is that of a warehouse for criminals. But there is a tendency in Europe to value role models like that of Norway, a country that offers one of the best prison infrastructures in the world and, on the other hand, has the lowest recidivism rate: 20% of inmates reoffend. In Brazil the estimate is 70%. In the United States it is 60%.

The strange thing about Haren’s prison is that before it was occupied by prisoners, 50 volunteer judges spent a night in prison and were subject to the same rules as criminals. The idea was for judges to know exactly how prison works so they could make more assertive sentences.
Back to the Brazilian Pablo Escobar: Brazil has already requested his extradition still no answer. The drug trafficker is suspected of handling more than R$2 billion in the shipment of 45 tons of cocaine to Europe.

During the Federal Police operation in Santa Catarina, which involved his right arm, two cars were confiscated, with a combined value of almost R$ 1 million: a BMW Z4 worth R$ 500,000, a Toyota SW4 worth R$ 500,000 of more than R$370,000 and a BMW S 1000 RR motorcycle worth more than R$120,000.
Despite his obvious wealth, the person under investigation lived discreetly, without arousing suspicion among his neighbors.
