Noting that Quebec will be without electricity due to the energy transition, the leader of the Quebec Conservative Party (PCQ) on Sunday proposed restarting Quebec’s LNG natural gas project and developing the natural gas industry in the province.

In particular, Éric Duhaime proposed recognizing natural gas as a “transitional energy” in the law passed by Quebec in 2022, mainly to end the exploration and production of hydrocarbons and the public funding of these activities.
According to the boss, the law should be changed to “enable the production of natural gas with strict safety and environmental standards in socially acceptable regions,” he said at the end of a symposium on energy issues.
In this sense, Mr. Duhaime proposes to restart the LNG Quebec project aimed at the development of a gas liquefaction complex and an export terminal in Saguenay, but also to develop other LNG projects with the aim of exporting this resource, especially to Europe.
Recall that the LNG Quebec project, which would have allowed the export of natural gas produced in western Canada, was buried by François Legault’s government following unfavorable environmental reports. In March, the promoter, Ruby River Capital, sought $20 billion in damages.
At the same time, the Conservative leader said he was in favor of building new hydroelectric power plants.
“With the inevitable massive electrification of transportation over the next decade, it is imperative to adopt a rational and visionary stance to meet the future energy needs of Quebecers at a competitive cost while ensuring our energy autonomy,” he pleaded.
