The Eagles (8-1) are on the road to face the Chiefs (7-2) in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII on Monday Night Football.
About the predictions:
Ruben Frank (7-2)
Usually with these predictions at the start of the week I have a pretty good idea of which direction I’m going to go. This one I went back and forth over and over again. About 50 times. I got dizzy. On the one hand, the Eagles haven’t beaten the Chiefs since 2009, and not many teams beat the Chiefs. They have only lost 30 games since 2016, which is crazy. So you can have the illusion that you are unbeatable. But they are not. They lost to the Lions, and they lost to the Broncos, and the Eagles had them on the ropes for most of the Super Bowl, and the Eagles are the team with the better record, and the Eagles are the team with the better Balance sheet offense and we keep hearing about the Chiefs’ improved defense and it’s better, but they’re allowing 4.5 yards per rush, they only have 13 takeaways and I think the Eagles can score some points against them because they score make on everyone. So it comes down to Patrick Mahomes against a shaky Eagles secondary, but Mahomes hasn’t been quite the Mahomes of old this year – statistically, he’s having his worst season ever (which is still very, very good) and the Chiefs are only having one real weapon, and he is the best receiving tight of all time, but I believe Sean Desai will find a way to defend a team with only one real weapon. And it won’t hurt that the Eagles’ pass rushers — whose 24 sacks are third-most in the league since Week 4 — probably won’t be slipping and sliding all over the field. So I’m going against the Eagles in a game that won’t be decided until the final minutes. Or later.
Eagles 33, Chiefs 31
Dave Zangaro (7-2)
I spent my week rambling. I think this is a very winnable game for the Eagles and I actually think they have the more talented squad. But the Chiefs have had a lot going for them in recent seasons, and this is a really tough matchup against Andy Reid coming off the bye week, a situation in which he always seems to thrive. Even if it rains Monday night, the field conditions in this game should be better than they were in Super Bowl LVII, and that should help the Eagles’ edge rushers stay sharp. But that advantage could be offset by Patrick Mahomes’ ability to avoid sacks better than any other quarterback in the NFL.
Even though the Chiefs defense has been fantastic this season, I still believe the Eagles will be able to put up points. I even think they will be able to play football. The problem is that I don’t have much confidence in the Eagles’ defense to stop the Chiefs’ Mahomes-led offense. This should be a close game. It could be the cable. On paper, I believe the Eagles actually have more talent than the Chiefs, but I’ll give the preference to the home team.
Chiefs 31, Eagles 28
Mike Mulhern (8-1)
As I re-watched Super Bowl LVII this week, a few things struck me. First and foremost, Nick Sirianni’s aggressiveness waned as the game progressed. The decision to kick a field goal and then punt on its first two possessions of the second half, while the Chiefs scored three straight touchdowns, was the game’s decisive turning point. I wouldn’t expect Sirianni’s foot to come off the gas so easily this time. The Eagles also didn’t include AJ Brown as much as they should have. Sure, they scored 35 points and his stats look great (6 catches, 96 yards, TD), but they only targeted him 8 times in 72 offensive plays (and just once on those two crucial drives). I expect that this will also change on Monday evening. The Chiefs’ defense has improved significantly, but Jalen Hurts’ knee has healed and he will remain at No. 11.
While the mystique of Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid is real, the Chiefs’ offense appears to be unhinged this season. Last year, they surprised teams in the post-Tyreek Hill world by living in undergarments. This year, defenses have adjusted and put the onus on Mahomes’ young wide receivers to out-hit them. So far it has paid off, as KC is averaging just 23.1 points per game. Sean Desai needs to get creative and the pass rush needs to get home. I see Jalen Carter doing just that to seal the game with a couple big sacks.
