Let’s move on to the links to the Philadelphia Eagles…
Eagles Player Rating: Zech McPhearson Edition – PhillyVoice
As mentioned above, if the season started today, McPhearson would likely be the starting CB2 versus Darius Slay, with Avonte Maddox in the slot. Of course, that could change if the Eagles pick a cornerback high in the draft. The Eagles may not be able to turn down a cornerback if exceptional value comes up for one, but the bet here is that given the extreme overabundance of young cornerbacks they’ve acquired since last April, they probably won’t be after one will grab. In other words I believe Sirianni when he says he wants to see what the youngsters can do and of the corners on the squad McPhearson is the most likely to crack the starting line-up. He’ll need a strong offseason to convince the team not to sign a year-old patch guy in the summer like they did with Nelson a year ago.
Malcolm Jenkins is considered one of the greatest leaders in Eagles history – BGN
In private he would laugh about it. Malcolm Jenkins knew the result. He knew in 2014 that Eagles fans were clamoring for the “other guy.” Jenkins, who signed a three-year, $16.5 million, $8.5 million guaranteed deal with the Eagles under Chip Kelly, was seen as a “consolation prize” at the time because the Eagles fanbase was clamoring for the free agent’s safety Demanded Jairus Byrd, who agreed to a six-year, $56 million contract, including $28 million guaranteed, with Jenkins’ former team, the New Orleans Saints. Jenkins played six seasons with the Eagles, never missing a game and eventually becoming a cornerstone for the 2017 Eagles Super Bowl championship team. Byrd played 33 games in three years for the Saints, suffering cruciate ligament tears in his knee in four games of his Saints career and was retired from the NFL after the 2017 season. For once, the story worked out for the Eagles because without Jenkins on the field and in the locker room, the Eagles wouldn’t have won the 2017 Super Bowl.
NFL Owner Meetings takeaway from Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni – BGN Radio
The Eagles’ top decision makers spoke earlier this week, and now Brandon Lee Gowton and Jimmy Kempski are here to break it down. The boys analyze what has been said about Jalen Hurts, Derek Barnett, Fletcher Cox, Deshaun Watson and others. BLG and Jimmy also wonder if the Eagles are in purgatory and issue their overall grades for Eagles Free Agency.
In Roob’s Observations, the pivotal role played by Jenkins in 2017 – NBCSP
2. Interesting note about Jenkins: He had 21 interceptions in his career and returned seven of them for touchdowns. This is the highest percentage of INTs turned into pick-6s by a player with at least 15 interceptions in NFL history. Second highest is Karlos Dansby, who returned six of his 20 INTs for touchdowns. Jenkins ranks 429th in interceptions but 12th in INT touchdown returns in NFL history.
NFL Draft 2022 Wide Receiver Projections: Rankings, Historical Comps for Treylon Burks, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, More – ESPN+
According to Playmaker, Burks leads the group of “good but not great” wide receivers in this draft. The Razorbacks have passed just 294 times this season, which means Burks’ 1,123 receiving yards and 11 touchdown receptions are more impressive than his raw numbers suggest. Arkansas also used Burks successfully in the running game, lapping for 112 yards with only 14 carries. Historically, star college wideouts with more college rushing attempts per game tend to have less impressive passing stats than their talent would otherwise produce. However, Burks is ahead of the other top 4 prospects in all receive rate statistics, although he also had more rushed attempts.
2022 NFL Draft Rankings: QB2 Matt Corral – NBC Sports Edge
There’s still a long way to go to become a top-flight NFL passer, and Corral needs to better protect his body as a runner to give himself any chance of getting there. But Corral is the only quarterback outside of Malik Willis in this class to have a top 10 NFL starting blanket, with a juicy arm, a dual threat element to his game, and days of moxie. I would throw the dice at him starting anywhere outside the top-10 if I needed a long-term quarterback and my OC was running a system that suited him.
The Patriots are reportedly acquiring Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker via trade – Pats Pulpit
After failing to take significant steps to bolster their wide receiver depth map in free agency, the New England Patriots expanded the positional group through trades. As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team acquired DeVante Parker from the Miami Dolphins. New England is sending a 2023 third-round pick to the Dolphins for Parker and a 2022 fifth-rounder, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. [BLG Note: Did you want the Eagles to do this deal?]
Frank Gore intends to retire with the 49ers and join San Francisco front office – NFL.com
The third-best rusher of all time in the league is about to hang up his cleats for good. Frank Gore told TheSFNiners.com this week that he plans to sign a one-day contract with the San Francisco 49ers, the team that drafted him, and retire from the NFL. It’s only a matter of time. “We’re still trying to figure out when I’ll go through my one-day contract, sign, retire,” Gore said. “I told (owner) Jed York that I always want to be a Niner. So we’re working on that right now.” [BLG Note: Should’ve signed a one-day deal with the Eagles! Smh.]
The mystery of Derek Stingley Jr. and why he could be the Cowboys’ Lamb/Parsons pick this year – Blogging The Boys
It feels a bit flimsy that the LSU star corner could drop to 24, but we should always be open to the possibility of crazy things happening. Stingley is one of the mysteries of the NFL draft as he was a shining star after his freshman season but hasn’t shined as brightly in the last two years. Injuries certainly contributed, and that’s why his stock keeps falling. But would he really fall that far? Well, that’s what ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum must be thinking as he mocked Stingley in front of the Cowboys a few days ago.
Report: Washington retained proceeds from ticket sales to go to visiting teams – Hogs Haven
It was reported this week that the House Oversight and Reform Committee is investigating the Washington Commanders over alleged financial shortcomings. They received information that the team has two books for its finances. That claim has now been expanded and a new report last night has given us some information as to what that might mean. From Office Sports’ AJ Perez broke the news that the House Oversight Committee has received information that Washington has allegedly withheld gate receipts to be sent to the league to be paid out to visiting teams. NFL statutes state that 40% of sales from each home game must be split with the other team, and this new claim says Washington didn’t send the full amount.
Ed’s Mock Draft 5.0: Taking a Different Approach – Big Blue View
Round 1 (#5) – Trade! I accepted picks 20, 52, and a first-round pick in 2023 from the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for picks 5 and 147. Georgia edge Travon Walker, cornerback Sauce Gardner, and offensive tackles Ickey Ekwonu and Charles Cross are all still on the board. I would guess quarterbacks go on picks 5 and 6, and even if they don’t, I have two of those four players to choose from at number 7. No reason not to, pick and set for the second round 2022 me up with an additional 2023 first timer.
