Universal Pictures has finally unveiled Christopher Nolan’s atomic bombing epic, Oppenheimer, at a world premiere in Paris, France. The first reactions to the almost three-hour drama are pouring in and are consistently positive. The film is described as a “spectacular achievement” and “daring”.

Former critic Kenneth Turan, writing for the Los Angeles Times, hailed “Oppenheimer” as “arguably Nolan’s most impressive work to date in the way it combines his recognized visual mastery with one of the most profound character dives in recent American cinema.”

Total Film assistant editor Matt Maytum said Nolan’s latest book left him “stunned,” adding: “[It’s] a character study on a grand scale, with a great central performance by Cillian Murphy. An epic historical drama but with a distinct Nolan sensibility: suspense, structure, sense of scale, stunning sound design, striking visuals. Wow.”

Associated Press writer Lindsey Bahr called the film “a spectacular achievement in its truthful, concise adaptation, imaginative storytelling, and differentiated performances by Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, and the many, many others involved.” .”

“Being engrossed in ‘Oppenheimer,’ a tight, suspenseful talkie that’s partly about the bomb and mostly about how doomed we are,” wrote Jonathan Dean, writer for The Sunday Times. “Happy Summer! Murphy is good but the support is essential: Damon, Downey Jr & Ehrenreich even bring gags. A bold, imaginative and complex film that leaves its audience unsettled.”

Based on the 2005 book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, “Oppenheimer” follows the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II from the perspective of theoretical physicist and Manhattan Project leader J. Robert Oppenheimer. Director’s longtime collaborator Cillian Murphy gets his first leading role in a Nolan tenpole thanks to “Oppenheimer,” which also stars Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr., the director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss , one of the film’s founding commissioners. Also starring are Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek and more.

Bird gushed about Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” adaptation during a chat at the Institute for Advanced Study last month.

“Right now I’m stunned and emotionally recovering from seeing it,” Bird said. “I think it’s going to be a stunning artistic achievement, and I have hope that it will actually stimulate a national, even global, discussion about the issues that Oppenheimer was keen to talk about – about how to live in the nuclear age, how to lives life with the bomb and about McCarthyism – what it means to be a patriot and what a scientist’s role is in speaking out on public issues in a society saturated with technology and science.”

Notably, “Oppenheimer” is Nolan’s first R-rated release since 2002’s “Insomnia.” It is also his first collaboration with Universal Pictures following his departure from Warner Bros., where he spent over a decade making films such as “Interstellar,” directed “Inception” and its “Dark Knight” trilogy.

“Oppenheimer” hits theaters nationwide on July 21 from Universal Pictures.
