A 7.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Indonesia. This was announced by the US Geophysical Institute USGS. The epicenter of the earthquake was at 427 kilometers south of the Indonesian island of Ambonat a depth of 95 kilometers, the USGS reported again, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) some aftershocks of magnitude 5.5 and a possible tsunami alert, then lifted.
Indonesia is subject to frequent seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide. On November 21, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the main island of Java, killing 602 people. However, the most devastating earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra on December 26, 2004: the 9.1 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, killing more than 230,000 people in Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
