Epicenters of earthquakes felt in Austria in October 2023
On October 7th, an incident occurred in the early afternoon at 2:59 pm CEST in Lower Austria, west of Wiener Neustadt Weikersdorf am Steinfelde (47.81°N, 16.15°E) a mild 2.1 magnitude earthquake. It was felt by several people, the intensity was 3-4 degrees on the 12-level European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98).
Another earthquake GlognitzThe sequence (epicenter 47.68°N, 15.96°E) in Lower Austria was reported to the earthquake service by around 270 people. It occurred on October 11th at 11:04 pm with a magnitude of 2.8 and woke up several people from their sleep. The vibrations were sometimes perceived as frightening and some small objects were knocked over. The earthquake reached an intensity of 4 to 5 degrees in EMS-98.
The Austrian Seismological Service thanks the population for their perception reports, which were used to determine the intensity of the earthquakes.

5 degrees | Strongly noticeable: Noticed by most people indoors and by some outdoors. Many sleepers awaken. Some people are scared. The buildings as a whole are shaken. Hanging objects swing heavily. Small objects are moved. Doors and windows open and close. Hairline cracks occur in some buildings, especially those that are susceptible to damage. |
