NOVA GORICA’s winds repeatedly fanned the flames in the parched karst vegetation. Entire villages were evacuated several times. Neighboring countries and other EU countries helped with firefighting planes and helicopters. On Sunday, two Romanian Air Force C-27J Spartan multi-role carriers were deployed for the first time.

World War I unexploded ordnance made it necessary to focus on fighting fires from the air so as not to unnecessarily endanger firefighting teams on the ground.

Between 1915 and 1918 bitter battles were fought between Austria-Hungary and Italy in the Isonzo Valley and the Julian Alps. The former war zone is now mostly in Slovenian Karst.

It has not yet been possible to assess the damage. It should happen in the next few days. In neighboring Italy, around 350 people were safely placed near Gorizia (Gorizia), on the border with Slovenia. The reason is the fire in Slovenia, which could spread to Italy because of strong winds, the fire department said on Sunday night. The Savogna d’Isonzo place was affected.
