This announcement comes one day after that of the lifting of sanctions against Niger during a summit of regional leaders on Saturday in Abuja. All three countries – Niger, Guinea and Mali – are ruled by military regimes.
As for Guinea, this decision is contained in the final communiqué of the meeting, a communiqué in English published on Sunday afternoon, announcing the lifting of all economic and financial sanctions against Guinea.
As a reminder, in September 2022, at a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, ECOWAS decided to impose “progressive sanctions” against Guinea following the September 2021 coup.
According to press releases at the time, ECOWAS “support and financial transactions of financial institutions” are suspended. Members of the junta, government and “transitional institutions” have had their financial assets frozen and been banned from traveling.
Will all of these measures be lifted? The final communiqué from yesterday's meeting does not currently contain any details.
