Ecuador’s “most wanted prisoner” has disappeared Jail
where he was detained, the country's authorities reported this Sunday (7). An operation was launched to locate José Adolfo Macias, the leader of the criminal group Los Choneros.
The country's armed forces have declared that one of the inmates of the Guayaquil prison is missing, national police commander General Cesar Zapata said in a press conference. Although the general did not name the prisoner, prosecutors said they would investigate Macias' “alleged escape.”
The criminal, also known as “Fito,” was sentenced to 34 years in prison in 2011 for crimes including drug trafficking and murder.
O Los Choneros
is a criminal organization associated with, among other things, extortion, murder and drug trafficking. The group is still accused of controlling the country's main prisons.
“We are grateful for the courage and commitment of the police forces who intervened in the prison in search of the most wanted prisoner as part of an operation that involved more than 3,000 people,” presidential spokesman Roberto Izurieta told Journalists.

Clashes between criminal organizations often occur in overcrowded prisons. According to official figures, more than 400 inmates have died since 2021.
