Ecuador’s anti corruption secretary resigns amid scandal

The Presidency of the Republic reported this Monday that it accepted his departure and thanked him for the services rendered since May 2022, although he has not commented since complaints about law enforcement officials came to light.

A press conference was scheduled for this morning to report on alleged irregularities, but the appointment was canceled without apparent reason.

Uncovered since earlier this month was the case originally known as The Great Godfather, renamed Encuentro, which would involve President Lasso’s brother-in-law Danilo Carrera and executives of public companies in the electricity sector.

This morning, the digital media company responsible for the revelations, La Posta, released new audio showing Carrera and its alleged operator Rubén Cherres talking over the phone about appointments to government posts.

What many are asking about the disclosure of this dialogue is why two people with no position or function in government are discussing appointing a member of Lasso’s cabinet.

In an interview broadcast on national television last night, the President denied that his government was having a hard time over these complaints and assured that there was no corruption in his government.

The case has rocked national politics on the cusp of a referendum that includes the possibility of expanding current oversight agencies, in what many see as a maneuver designed to cover up these types of illegal acts.
