EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Queen Consort is asking King Charles to honor her former roommate Virginia Carrington – despite once calling Camilla a ‘total sucker’
The Queen Consort asked King Charles to approve a tribute to her former flatmate Virginia Carington – although the old friend once called Camilla a “total slob”.
Camilla Shand was a fun-loving 17-year-old when she and Virginia, daughter of the late Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington, rented a two-bedroom flat in Belgravia together.
Virginia’s observation is recalled by author Jessica Jayne in her book The Duchess Of Cornwall: Camilla’s Story And Secrets. “When she got home, she’d just drop her clothes on the floor and lie there,” Jayne writes. “Camilla’s bedroom always looked like a bomb had hit it.”
In his first New Year’s Roll of Honor, the King authorized the bestowal of the CVO on Virginia, whose brother Rupert is now Lord Great Chamberlain.

Circa 1965 Camilla and Virginia rented a flat on London’s exclusive Edbury Street after completing the Queen Consort’s etiquette studies at Mon Fertile school near Geneva.
Writer Gyles Brandreth also described the scene: “Virginia was pretty neat and organized, and Camilla was driving her insane in the nicest way. Virginia once told me, “You know, Camilla has this inability to put anything on a hanger.
“And she has an aversion to cleaning liquids of any kind. You should see the state of the bathroom once she’s been in it.”
Dating back to the reign of Queen Victoria, the New Year’s Roll of Honor celebrates figures who have made a contribution to society.
Virginia was honored alongside many others, including members of England’s Lionesses football team for their Euro win this summer and Grayson Perry for his artistry.

Just three years ago, Camilla, along with a host of politicians, visited Westminster Abbey following the death of Virginia’s father, Lord Carrington.
He sadly died after his 99th birthday in July 2018 and was the last surviving member of Winston Churchill’s post-war cabinet.
Lord Carrington was also the last Tory foreign secretary to step down, before Boris Johnson.
