Edmonton police said a friend of the boy's mother was caring for him and was walking with him near her home when she noticed he was in medical distress.

Police added that the mother and her friend took the 23-month-old child to a nearby medical clinic, where a staff member noted his poor condition; He immediately contacted 911.

The child was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, the medical examiner's office determined that the boy had accidentally ingested fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

After an investigation, police said they arrested the little boy's mother's 20-year-old boyfriend in early December, who was later charged with criminal negligence causing death.

The toddler's mother and her partner, who was not the boy's biological father, turned themselves in to authorities two weeks later and both face the same charges.
