Made in 1661, the crown is traditionally used to crown British monarchs. Before the ceremony of King Charles III. however, adjustments still need to be made to the crown jewel.
The British royal crown is in preparation for the coronation of Charles III. (74) taken from the Tower of London. As announced by Buckingham Palace, the Edwardian crown will be reshaped for the May 6, 2023 ceremony. According to information from the dpa, the size of the crown for Charles should be increased.
The crown, made of pure gold and set with precious stones such as rubies, amethysts and sapphires, is the heart of the British Crown Jewels in the Tower. It was made in 1661 to replace the original crown of the last Anglo-Saxon king, Edward the Confessor (died 1066), which had been melted down shortly before during the English Civil War.
The Edwardian crown is traditionally used to crown British monarchs. It was also used by Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September, at her coronation in 1953. Charles will also wear the Imperial State Crown at the ceremony, the palace said. This wreath was placed in the Queen’s coffin at her funeral.
It was initially unclear whether King’s wife Camilla, who will also be crowned at the ceremony, will wear the last crown worn by the Queen Mother. India’s world famous Kohinoor diamond is crafted into the crown of Queen Elizabeth’s mother. According to a media report, representatives of India’s ruling BJP party criticized the possible use of the crown. British newspaper The Telegraph recently reported that it could bring back memories of the colonial era. At the request of the German Press Agency over the weekend, the palace announced that a decision on this was still pending.
