Egypt: A Russian was killed by a shark in the Red Sea and the animal was caught

Born in 1999 and living in Egypt, the Russian was attacked by a shark off Hurghada in the Red Sea.

A Russian man was killed by a shark off the Egyptian Red Sea city of Hurghada on Thursday, authorities said.

“A shark attack on a man (…) resulted in his death,” Egypt’s Environment Ministry said on Facebook, without giving further details.

Russian media said the victim was a Russian man in his 20s.

Russian Consul General Viktor Voropayev told the official Russian news agency TASS that the Egyptian authorities had confirmed the death of a Russian citizen born in 1999.

“The victim was not a tourist but a permanent resident of Egypt,” he told the agency.

A shark with ‘abnormal behavior’

In a video shared on social media purporting to show the incident, one person appears to be struggling to outrun a shark.

Egypt’s Environment Ministry said the shark was caught and its investigation revealed “abnormal behavior… which caused the incident”.

He added that swimming and water games would be suspended for two days starting Friday.

The Red Sea is a major tourist destination in Egypt. Sharks are not uncommon there, but very rarely attack swimmers unless they exceed the allowable limits.

In July 2022, two tourists, an Austrian and a Romanian, were killed by a shark near Hurghada.

In 2018 a Czech tourist was killed by a shark off an Egyptian beach in the Red Sea, in 2015 a German and in 2010 a German woman.
