According to a security source, two cars approached a checkpoint in a residential area of the city and two attackers opened fire on the police officers. The officials replied: Killing one of the attackers while the other escaped.
The same source said the attack was likely an “act of terrorism” and described it as the first of its kind in nearly three years in mainland Egypt, which was largely spared the terrorist attacksUprising in the Sinai Peninsula.
In recent years, attacks on security forces have been concentrated in Sinai, where jihadists linked to Islamic State continue to operate. In May, 11 soldiers were killed in an attack in West Sinai.
