“El Chapo” Guzman calls for help in Mexico

Former Mexican drug trafficker Joaquin Guzman, nicknamed “El Chapo,” asked for help in Mexico through one of his lawyers on Tuesday over the “mental torment” he is allegedly suffering in prison in the United States, where he is serving a life sentence.

“He hasn’t seen the sun in the six years that Joaquin has been in the United States,” his lawyer in Mexico, José Refugio Rodriguez, said in an interview with Radio Formula.

Locked up in the deserted mountains of Colorado, in one of the most secure prisons in the United States, “Chapo” Guzman only leaves his cell three times a week without ever seeing the sun, Me Rodriguez added.

The attorney says he received a voicemail from Guzman, 65, about Mariel Colon, one of his attorneys in the United States, and one of his sisters.

“He suffers from mental disorders,” he continued, fearing a “deterioration” in his health that could lead to an untimely death.

According to the lawyer, according to an agreement with the United States, the Mexican authorities must monitor his detention conditions.

The “Chapo”, once the feared leader of the Sinaloa cartel, is also protesting against the alleged disregard of the procedures when he was extradited in January 2017. In October he had asked for his sentence to be lifted and for a new trial.

The complaints of the “Chapo” come after the arrest of one of his sons, Ovidio Guzman, on 5 authorities).

On July 18, 2019, a New York court found Joaquin Guzman guilty of drug trafficking, money laundering and use of firearms.

The cocaine trafficking trial of Genaro Garcia Luna, former Mexican security minister between 2006 and 2012, began Tuesday in the same Brooklyn court.

Mr. Garcia Luna is accused of taking bribes to protect the Sinaloa cartel from the “Chapo” and of being involved in trafficking at least 53 tons of cocaine into the United States.
