El Niño: June will be the hottest in world history Olhar Digital

As pointed out by the WMO (World Meteorological Organization), the El Niño climate phenomenon is back and already having a significant impact on the planet. Copernicus (the European Union’s Earth Observation Program) revealed that ocean surfaces had the hottest May on record and now we’re going to have the world’s hottest June.

“The world just had the hottest start to June on record, after May was just 0.1C cooler than the record,” said Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus service. “Global average surface air temperatures in the first few days of June were the highest ever recorded in the ERA5 dataset for early June, and by a significant margin.”

Understand the weather phenomenon

  • According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, the El Niño weather phenomenon is back and is expected to result in extreme weather conditions in late 2023;
  • This unusual weather pattern could result in warming or above average temperatures on the surface of the central and eastern tropical Pacific;
  • The events of this phenomenon usually occur irregularly and at intervals of two to seven years and influence the global climate.

This is not surprising as there is a trend towards rising temperatures. […] We knew that during an El Niño event, temperatures tend to rise tens of degrees.

FrançoisMarie Bréon, Deputy Director of the Laboratory of Climate and Environmental Sciences (LSCE).

“If a year is particularly hot, that doesn’t necessarily matter, but what is clear is this strong trend, showing a temperature increase of about 0.2°C per decade,” adds Bréon.

These climate imbalances can lead to wildfires, the melting of the poles and even an increase in the demand for electricity for air conditioning all contributing to global warming.
