Rodrigo Chaves, leader of the right-wing Progressive Social Democratic Party, was elected President-elect of Costa Rica, beating former National Liberation Party President José María Figueres in the presidential election.

According to the Supreme Electoral Court, after representing more than 98% of the receiving bodies, Chaves won 53% of the vote, while his opponent received 47.15% of the vote. Abstention reached 43.23% among more than 3.5 million registered voters.

Also on the day of the presidential elections in Serbia, the current head of state Alexander Vucic, representative of the Progressive Party, emerged victorious with 58.55% of the votes against 18.34% received by his rival in the elections.

The turnout was 58.71% of more than 6.5 million Serbian citizens who had to vote in 8,267 polling stations.

It also emerged that in Hungary they invalidated a referendum sponsored by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to pressure citizens’ opinions on the reforms that limit the dissemination of gender equality and sexual diversity content because of no citizen participation was required.

The referendum coincided with the parliamentary elections in Hungary, in which the president’s party again received a large majority; the valid votes, however, did not exceed half of the electorate.
