Chile has elected the 51 people who will be part of the Constitutional Council, the body responsible for drafting the proposal for a new constitution, and who will work on a preliminary draft drawn up by a commission of experts. The 25 men and 25 women who prevailed in the elections have to start work on June 7 and finish in another five months.
The big surprise on Election Day came from the Republican Party, which managed to elect 22 MPs from their list. Further behind was Unidad para Chile, which added 17 directors, a far cry from the number needed to gain control of the editorial board. The traditional right, which is part of the Chilean Seguro Pact, achieved 11 elected votes. Center left Todo por Chile and the populist Partido de la Gente won no seats. All were joined by the Mapuche representative Alihuén Antileo, who won the seat reserved for the indigenous peoples with more than 150,000 votes.
