From Chechnya to Ukraine, history repeats itself. More than thirty years have passed since the Russians committed war crimes against the Chechens, which have gone down in history for their harshness and cruelty. To act as a link between the events of the 90’s and those of today Wladimir Putinwho, then as now, uses cruel techniques to get prisoners of war to talk.
Putin’s torture to get enemies to talk
As happened in Chechnya, in Ukraine the Kremlin army is ready to implement this more cruel torture techniques to get enemy prisoners to talk. Around Grozny there are people who still remember with horror the violence endured in the war.
So said the Guardian journalist John Sweeney, who in recent years has collected the testimonies of many Chechens who have exposed some of the worst torture suffered during the period of the territory’s occupation by the Russian army.

Elephant technique, the history of torture
One of the most common torture techniques was the socalled “elephant technique’, in which the prisoner was handcuffed after donning the gas mask. The actual violence began when the Russians closed the breathing tube to choke the prisoner, then the actual poisoning with the gas sprayed into the breathing hole.
Many witnesses reported that the antigas mask He was so terrified that many would only start confessing at sight of the object in order to save their lives.
Chemical toilets, what the Russians did in Chechnya
In addition to prolonged beatings, electric shocks and humiliation, most of the torture took place in Chernokozovo, about sixty kilometers northwest of Grozny. Among them was the chemical bath.
As a former prisoner related, the Russians pushed enemies into the tank and forced them to swim. In addition to the water, the basins were also filled chemicals which eventually suffocated or caused the prisoners damage such as blindness.
Despite the overwhelming evidence of torture, Putin and the Russians have never admitted to using these techniques and probably continue to use them in Ukraine today to get their rivals to talk and to achieve the goal of killing President Zelenskyy as quickly as possible.
