French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne submitted her resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday (8). There are rumors that there will be a reshuffle of the country's government.

Macron accepted the resignation and wrote a public thank you on the social network X (Twitter).

Borne, 62, took office as Prime Minister in May 2022. She was the second woman to head the French government.

During its 20month term as head of government, the government did not have an absolute majority in parliament. . This period was marked by discussions about the decreeimposed pension reform and an episode of urban unrest in mid2023.

In December, immigration reform was passed that was considered conservative. To win support from the right, Macron's government tightened the text of immigration laws.

In his resignation letter, Borne said it was “more necessary than ever to continue reforms.”

Now the French Parliament must choose a successor to Borne. Education Minister Gabriel Attal is considered the favorite among the possible successors, according to executive sources. At 34, he became the youngest head of government in the French Republic and the first openly gay person to hold the office.

The elections to the European Parliament in June 2024 will serve as a benchmark for the restructuring. An Opinionway poll from midDecember showed Marine Le Pen's farright National Regroupment party leading the polls with 27% of the vote, followed by Macron's Renaissance Party (19%).
