An elite Spanish mountaineer has just emerged from a cave after spending almost a year and a half underground alone and told her supporters she didn’t want to come out because “I hadn’t finished my book yet”.

Beatriz Flamini, 50, who spent 500 days – and two birthdays – isolated about 230 feet underground outside Granada, returned to the surface on Friday without a word about the Ukraine war, the end of COVID-19 restrictions and the death knowing the Queen Elizabeth II

“I was asleep when they came for me,” said Flamini, whose stay underground would end on her 500th day. “I thought something had happened. I already said? Certainly not.’ I hadn’t finished my book yet.”

When asked if she’d ever panicked underground, she replied, “Never. Actually, I didn’t want to come out!”

Flamini’s support crew, who brought her food and other supplies during her time in the cave, said the underground feat set a record for time alone underground. The Guinness Book of Records could not immediately confirm this.

Flamini climbed into the cave on November 20, 2021 – although her crew admitted she showed up for eight days to fix a router used to send audio and video but remained isolated in a tent.

She said she spent her time underground exercising, painting, knitting hats and working her way through 60 books. It wasn’t long before she lost all sense of time.

Beatriz Flamini, 50, spent 500 days in a Spanish cave before reappearing for the first time on Friday

“On day 65, I stopped counting and lost track of time,” she said. “I didn’t speak out loud to myself, but I did have internal conversations and got along very well with myself.

“You have to stay aware of your feelings,” Flamini said. “It’s natural to be scared, but never panic or you’ll become paralyzed.”

While their support team provided them with clean clothes, cleaned up their trash and fed them — including precious avocados and fresh eggs — they were under strict orders not to communicate directly.

“If there is no communication, there is no communication, regardless of the circumstances,” she said. “People who know me knew and respected that.”

Flamini will finally be brought to the surface on Friday after spending 500 days underground doing things like exercising, painting, knitting wool hats and working through 60 books to while away the hours. Flamini was monitored by experts and provided a panic button but never used it.

A team of psychologists, researchers, cavers and fitness trainers will now examine them to examine the effects of isolation and potential disorientation due to long-term seclusion.

The Guinness Book of World Records credits a group of 33 miners trapped underground for 69 days in 2010 with the longest time they have survived underground.

A representative couldn’t say if there was a separate record for volunteer time underground or if Flamini’s caving attempt set a new world record.
