HISTORY – In the past, less innocuous confidences from prime ministers didn’t make the palace smile.

Ironically, Elizabeth II began her life as queen with Churchill and ended it with the one who wanted to be the heir to the old lion. Boris Johnson was the last head of government the Queen actually fraternized with, Liz Truss had only been admitted for two days when she died. Formally, however, the sovereign with a record government has known fifteen prime ministers. Many anecdotes, told or already revealed since her death, line the strange relationship between who was the head of state and those who ran the country. Some are lighthearted and testify to traits of the late Queen’s character, whether it be her sense of humor or sense of duty. Others delve deep into the grand history and subtle constitutional rules of this ancient parliamentary monarchy.
