Elle Fanning has revealed that in front of the cameras there is still hope for a collaboration with her sister Dakota Fanning.
In late 2019, it was announced that the sisters would play sisters in the film adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s 2015 novel The Nightingale. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the film was in pre-production and its release date was repeatedly pushed back, leading many to question whether the project had been abandoned for good.
In an interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actress told host Josh Horowitz that the feature film could yet see the light of day. “The nightingale is relevant again, I think. Honestly, I think we both wish this time was the right one. The script is so good, the book is so popular, I hope it works,” said the 25-year-old star.
The American star said she and her 29-year-old sister have been given other opportunities to play sisters on screen. “There’s something in the air where all the creatives have the same idea at the same time, and I feel like there’s a lot of things coming up with sisters now. We tell ourselves, “We can’t work on everything together!” she said with humor. But we also thought it could be very funny to always do different stories of sisters. But we have to do the first one first.”
Directed by French actress Mélanie Laurent, The Nightingale tells the story of two young sisters who must survive during the German occupation of France in World War II.
This is the first time the Fanning sisters have appeared on screen together. They both appeared in the 2001 film I Am Sam, but played the same character at different ages, so they didn’t interact with each other.
