Welcome back to The Station, your central hub for all past, present and future ways of moving people and packages from point A to point B.

This is Rebecca Bellan and yes, I’m still steering the ship.

The biggest news this week was Elon Musk’s visit to China, a move that has the potential to strengthen Tesla’s ties with the world’s largest auto market. It’s Musk’s first visit since the COVID-19 pandemic, and his commitment to China isn’t surprising given how much China’s vehicle sales are outpacing the automaker’s global sales. China accounted for more than half of Tesla deliveries in the first quarter.

Despite Twitter being banned in China, Musk has still managed to become a legend among the Chinese people, Rita reports. The CEO has over 2 million followers on Weibo, where Musk shares his admiration for China, opposition to supply chain disruption, and plans to expand his business in China.

“The Chinese space program is far more advanced than most people realize,” Musk wrote on Weibo.

His nice talk has earned him the nickname “Iron Man”.

Bits of Musk’s visit to China are still evolving and we’ll keep you posted, but here’s what we know so far. Musk began his journey with a dinner with Zeng Yuqun, chairman of CATL, one of the largest battery makers. Recently, there have been talks of a CATL-Tesla partnership to build cheaper batteries in the US, but no concrete conclusions yet.

Musk also paid a visit to the Shanghai Gigafactory, where he met the people behind Tesla’s popular Model 3 and Model Y.

We’ll be on the lookout for more news on what Musk is doing in China. And so to the rest!

offer of the week

Lucid group plans to raise $3 billion through an equity offering, the majority of which will come from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). PIF already owns more than 60% of the company and has agreed to purchase 265.7 million shares in a private placement for approximately $1.8 billion, at a price of approximately $6.80 per share. The remainder is to be raised from a public offering of 173.5 million common shares, according to the company.

Shares immediately fell 9% in after-hours trading as investors pondered how much more cash Lucid would need to offset mounting losses and dwindling available capital. And it’s all amid a looming recession, a Tesla-initiated price war, and the aftertaste of large-scale layoffs in March.

Sure, Lucid can bring in more cash, but the company really needs to fix its spending problem. In the first quarter, Lucid’s cash and cash equivalents decreased to $900 million compared to $1.74 billion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2022.

The redesigned Citroen Ami is a retro-looking four-wheeler with a convertible top and ropes instead of doors, and apart from a teaser image, that’s pretty much all we know about it. He probably won’t be any faster than the Ami, which tops out at around 28mph, so he’ll be a no-go for the States.
