Elon Musk announces the new Tesla plant in Nuevo Leon

Elon Musk announces the new Tesla plant in Nuevo León to his investors: “We look forward to the ‘gigaméxico'”

“We are pleased to announce that we will build a gigafactory in Mexico,” said Elon Musk to the loudest applause on Wednesday afternoon. “Of course we’re going to have a grand opening, a great groundbreaking, but we’re excited to announce that the next new gigafactory in Mexico will be near Monterrey. Super excited,” he added. The plant will produce Tesla’s new “next generation” vehicle.

Tesla held its Investor Day, an event where it updates its investors on its plans and funding needs. On Wednesday, Musk and his team unveiled what they call Master Plan 3 to accelerate the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The company, the world’s leading maker of electric vehicles, has four car factories it calls “Gigafactories.”

“We will continue to expand production at all of our existing factories, the one in California, the one in Nevada, of course the one here in Texas and the one in Shanghai. We intend to increase production in all factories so that the “gigamexico” will complement the production of all other factories. I want to be clear that we are not going to shift production from anywhere to anywhere, this is an overexpansion of total global production. It will be good”.

“I think the governor’s here?” Musk said. “Welcome. And I believe the Secretary of State has come too. If anything, we look forward to a grand opening.” Nuevo León Governor Samuel García attended the event in Texas, as announced on his social networks. According to sources with knowledge of the project, the investment is around $4,500 million and could reach production of up to one million electric vehicles per year.

Joe Biden’s administration in the United States is requiring semiconductor and electrical technology companies like Tesla to leave China to settle in their country or in an “ally” country like their key trading partners Mexico and Canada. Specialists have predicted that with the arrival of Tesla, Mexico will consolidate as a power exporter of cars and car parts.

A point of tension in recent weeks has been the arrival of Tesla in Nuevo León, a state governed by an opposition party led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The presidency provided incentives for Tesla to better settle in the state of Hidalgo, near one of López Obrador’s emblematic works, the Felipe Ángeles International Airport. However, Tesla chose Nuevo León, López Obrador announced on Tuesday.
