Elon Musk describes as "coup" Regime change in Ukraine in 2014

The businessman commented Saturday on University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer’s article entitled “Why Ukraine’s Crisis is the West’s Blame”.

American businessman Elon Musk called the way Viktor Yanukovych became President of Ukraine “unreliable”, but assured that the change of government that took place in the country in 2014 was undoubtedly deposed by Yanukovych, it was “a coup d’état”.

The billionaire posted those words on his official Twitter account on Saturday, commenting on a user’s post, which read an article by John Mearsheimer, a professor at the University of Chicago, entitled “Why the crisis in Ukraine is the West’s fault.” shared.

In the article, published in 2014, Mearsheimer argues that “NATO expansion” and Western interference in Ukrainian politics were the factors that enabled Russia to retake Crimea. “For Putin, the illegal overthrow of Ukraine’s democratically elected and pro-Russian president, which he rightly dubbed a ‘coup’, was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” reads the excerpt from the article.

“Possibly these elections were shady, but there is no doubt that there was a coup,” Musk tweeted in response.

What happened in Ukraine?
On November 21, 2013, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine ordered to suspend the process of preparing the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, citing the need to develop economic and trade relations with the former Soviet republics, and especially with Russia, as the reason for its decision.

In response to this decision, hundreds of people gathered in the center of the Ukrainian capital to protest the suspension of the deal. The demonstrations didn’t last long to turn into riots and clashes with police. The protests intensified and became increasingly violent. The demonstrators were no longer just demanding the signing of the agreement with the EU, but also the resignation of the president and the resignation of the government.

On February 22, 2014, shortly after agreeing to a ceasefire that did not last a single day, the opposition ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, appointed Alexander Turchinov as interim president and called early elections. He also dissolved the Constitutional Court and revoked the law guaranteeing the use of Russian as an official language in Crimea and other regions.
