Elon Musk Launches AI Chatbot “Grok” – Says It Can Outperform ChatGPT – Cointelegraph

Elon Musk and his artificial intelligence startup xAI have released “Grok” – an AI chatbot that can reportedly outperform OpenAI’s first iteration of ChatGPT in multiple academic tests.

The motivation behind building Gruk is to create AI tools to help humanity by strengthening research and innovation, Musk and xAI explained in a Nov. 5 post on X (formerly Twitter).

Musk and the xAI team said a “unique and fundamental advantage” of Grok is that it has real-time knowledge of the world through the X platform.

“It will also answer tough questions rejected by most other AI systems,” Muska and xAI said. “Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of humor and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor!”

The engine that powers Grok – Grok-1 – was evaluated in multiple academic tests in math and coding and performed better than ChatGPT-3.5 in all tests, according to data shared by xAI.

However, in none of the tests did it outperform the most advanced version of OpenAI, GPT-4.

“It is only outperformed by models trained with a significantly larger amount of training data and computing resources, such as GPT-4,” Musk and xAI said. “This demonstrates the rapid progress we at xAI are making in training LLMs with exceptional efficiency.”

The AI startup noted that Grok will be available on X Premium Plus for $16 per month. However, it is currently only offered to a limited number of users in the US.

According to xAI, Grok is still a “very early beta product” and should improve rapidly each week.

The xAI team said it will also implement additional security measures over time to ensure Grok is not used maliciously.

“We believe that AI has enormous potential to contribute significant scientific and economic value to society and will therefore work to develop reliable safeguards against catastrophic forms of malicious use.”

“We believe we must do our utmost to ensure that AI continues to be a force for good,” xAI added.

The AI startup’s launch of Grok comes eight months after Musk founded the company in March.
