Elon Musk, Twitter Inc.’s largest shareholder, suggested turning the social media company’s San Francisco headquarters into a homeless shelter because “nobody shows up anyway.”

Musk made the suggestion via a Twitter poll on Saturday night. As of Sunday morning, nearly 1.2 million people had responded, and 91.1% of them voted in favor of the idea.

ELON MUSK ACQUIRES STAKE IN TWITTER AFTER REVIEWING HIS APPROACH TO ‘FREE SPEECH’

Musk’s poll comes a week after he acquired a 9.2% stake in Twitter stock, making him the company’s largest shareholder. Musk has criticized Twitter’s handling of free speech on the platform and has suggested a number of tongue-in-cheek changes to the company since his share purchase.

He tweeted another poll on Sunday morning about whether the letter “W” should be removed from “Twitter.” The only available answers were “Yes” and “Of course”.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal announced last week that Musk will join Twitter’s board of directors. Musk will also participate in a Q&A at City Hall with Twitter employees, some of whom have expressed concern about Musk’s presence at the company, Agrawal announced to employees Thursday.

“We’re saying that Twitter is what’s happening right now and what people are talking about right now. Often on Twitter we are what is happening and what people are talking about. That was certainly the case this week,” Agrawal wrote in a company-wide email on Thursday, according to the Washington Post. “Following our board announcement, many of you had various types of questions about Elon Musk, and I invite you to ask him those questions.”

Musk’s purchase comes shortly after the billionaire Tesla founder criticized Twitter for a lack of commitment to free speech.

“Given that Twitter serves as a de facto public marketplace, failure to uphold the principles of free speech fundamentally undermines democracy,” Musk tweeted March 26. “What should be done?”

“Is a new platform needed?” he later tweeted.

Many of Musk’s nearly 80 million Twitter followers back then encouraged him to buy Twitter’s platform outright or create his own.

Twitter has repeatedly censored conservative viewpoints in recent years. The company suspended the conservative satirical site The Babylon Bee from its Twitter account for portraying Dr. Biden administration official Rachel Levine had jokingly presented the Man of the Year award. Levine is a transgender woman.

Twitter also blocked sharing of links to a New York Post article that revealed the contents of a Hunter Biden laptop. While critics at the time ridiculed the story as Russian disinformation, both the New York Times and Washington Post have since acknowledged that the story was accurate.
