Em Rusciano says she’s trying to “unravel” the way she was coping with autism before the disorder was diagnosed
Em Rusciano was officially diagnosed with autism last week, just over a year after being diagnosed with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder).
And on Saturday, the radio and TV personality said she’s trying to unlearn how she managed the disorder before she was diagnosed.
The 43-year-old shared a photo of herself and her son Elio, who has also been diagnosed with autism, on Instagram and wrote, “E and I have always bonded on a magical level. It kind of feels like we exist in our own personal space.

“We both share a love for microscopic details, simple pasta and really soft blankets. He gets me and I get him and now I know why. I got my autism diagnosis a week ago and to be honest, it wasn’t really a shock.”
She explained how she was preparing to go through her son’s diagnosis process, but she still finds herself “unraveling all the ways in which being an undiagnosed autistic person has affected my life.”
“Ultimately, I’m working toward the release from masking and pretending that I’ve learned, two things that little kid never has to do when I have a say in the matter,” Em continued.

“So on this day of visibility for all people with disabilities, I simply ask that you celebrate, see and honor those of us who may be different than you. #IDPwD.”
On Friday, Em went into more detail about her diagnosis in a series of posts on Instagram.
“I understand that I may not fit with your prejudice about what autism is, but it’s not my job to do that. I was diagnosed by a specialist in the field,” she said.

Em said she was “overwhelmed” when she filled out the questions about her condition because it was like “they described my childhood.”
In a recent Facebook post, the former radio host also explained some of her ADHD symptoms.
Her list included difficulty following recipes, maps, and directions.
“I can’t wear a hair tie or hair tie around my wrist, I feel like I’m choking,” she explained.
Em’s children are all neurodivergent. Their three-year-old son Elio has autism and their daughter ADHD.
