Contemporary discussions of psychoanalysis as a clinical and scientific discipline have led to new perspectives on the mind-body problem. This applies above all to the intense dialogue with the neurosciences, which is now also shaping the public perception of psychoanalysis.

Among other things, it is about the realization that memory and remembrance are not just services of our brain, but are stored throughout the body and in various body perceptions. The body shows its “memory” via sensorimotor sensations, in the form of psychosomatic complaints or organ stimuli, but encrypted!

However, the concept of embodiment does not focus on the decoding of so-called “body language”, but is based on the overarching fact that the body is causally involved in all mental processes, in all feelings, thoughts, memories, even in times Human Development that we cannot consciously remember – such as in infancy or childhood. Whereas in earlier models of thought, remembering and recognizing merely led to the automatic “replay” of identical engrams, embodiment encompasses both the physiology and psychology of memory in equal measure, understanding memory both in interaction with the environment and in constant change. adaptive in the body.

This is what the results of research by psychoanalyst and director of the Sigmund Freud Institute in Frankfurt, Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber, show. Together with her team, she takes a radically new look at the mind-body problem. Incorporation, that is, the “embedding” of physical and relationship experiences, including those that occur before language acquisition, has therefore become an innovative concept. This applies to basic research as well as discoveries in the neurosciences, microbiology or genetics. The incorporation directs a new perspective on the processes of early development, early parenthood, prevention of developmental deficiencies and traumatic and depressive psychological processes.
