Émily Bégin’s main television memories date back to the 1990s, a decade of Quebec series where the characters didn’t want to be imposed. And several strong women had qualities that could greatly please him.
Emily, what shows shaped you when you were young?
As a teenager there were Chambres en ville, Watatatow and Les filles de Caleb which I listened to with my mother. Also the sequel, Blanche. They were all strong series. I also listened to La petite vie with my parents. There were all lances and counts. We still have the TV movie set at my parents’ vacation home. My father and brother played hockey for a long time, so it was a big part of my life. Even younger, I’ve seen Robin and Stella.
You have seen very different productions…
Yes, I remember it in the 1990s. I have few memories of the 1980s other than my appearance on the show Les mini-stars de Nathalie in 1989, which was my first appearance on television. . I loved Le Village de Nathalie.
What were you looking for in front of the TV?
If I refer to the people in Chambers in the City and Watatatowlanc, they were a bit older than me, but I liked the student life. With Les filles de Caleb et Blanche I found it fascinating to see what happened back then to characters like Émilie Bordeleau and Oliva… I fell completely in love with Roy Dupuis. And I think of Diva with Caroline Néron and Jacynthe René… Wow! From a young age I was interested in fashion.
Is there a character in any of these shows that you would have loved to have played?
I remember Caroline Néron [alias Stella, NDLR] in Diva was the beautiful girl with torque and a motorcycle. I loved this girly character with a little masculine side. Like Emilie Bordeleau, we all wanted to be teachers at some point. Back then there were long dresses, horses, small houses with big families… Lola’s role in Chambres en ville was also notable. And I really liked that of Patricia Paquin, Geneviève, the skier. When I was young I was very athletic; I was a gymnast. I found myself in it a little bit.
Which universe should the children discover?
The internet has made kids so cosmopolitan these days… If I want to listen to them music videos, I watch YouTube. I no longer need MusiquePlus […] I’m very nostalgic, but as a mother of a boy, two stepsons and a stepdaughter, I need to stay current.
Although the season of If we still loved each other As TVA comes to an end, it is possible to see Émily Bégin and her lover Guillaume Lemay-Thivierge in the docu-reality Without a plan! offered on True. In addition, Émily Bégin “throws into the void” with a first starring role in a TV series WEFwhich will be broadcast on Unis TV in winter 2024. She will play a singer of bygone fame who returns to her childhood French Ontarian village after the death of her mother.
