Emily Blunt has faced backlash after calling a waitress at a restaurant in America “fat-shaming” because the star called her “huge”.
In a resurfaced clip from the star’s appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2012, Emily opens up about how she was recognized at the chain restaurant Chilis while filming the movie Looper.
Speaking to Jonathan, Emily said: “The girl who served us was huge, you know, I think she got free meals at Chilis.”
As the audience laughed, the host joked, “There’s nothing wrong with that,” as he responded to Emily’s answer. Comment.
When the clip resurfaced on social media, fans took to Twitter to slam the star and express their dismay at her offensive comment.
Shocking: Emily Blunt faces backlash after ‘fat shaming’ a waitress at a restaurant in America because the star called her ‘enormous’.
Rude: The actress called the waitress “huge” before suggesting she got free meals at the grocery chain
One fan wrote: “Emily Blunt’s blatant fatphobia wasn’t on my bingo card for 2023 but here we are.”
Clearly annoyed, another tweeted: “Ugh shit Emily Blunt was seriously one of my favorite actresses but turns out she’s a fatphobic unfunny mean girl who thinks it’s funny to point out a server’s size if that.” contributes nothing to the story – “to be ashamed of.”
A third said: “Emily Blunt’s fatphobia is so disappointing I guess another one bites the dust.”
And a fourth added: “Emily Blunt canceled 12 years after interview in which she was fatphobic.” Big murder. I love watching it!’
As the clip continued, it seemed like the anecdote had nothing to do with the waitress’s height, as Emily recounted how she was recognized by the girl.
She continued, “She comes and says, ‘Has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Emily Blunt?’ and I said, ‘I heard that, yes,’ and she said, ‘Are you Emily Blunt?’
After the actress confirmed that she was indeed Emily Blunt, the waitress shouted, “What are you all doing here?”
Emily then told the employee that she was filming for her movie “Looper,” to which the girl replied, “Looper?” You just made that up.’
A long time ago: The star was last seen in “Oppenheimer,” over 10 years after the 2012 clip resurfaced
Tune in: As the audience laughed, the host joked, “There’s nothing wrong with that,” as he responded to Emily’s snide comment
Outrage: Fans are in an uproar as they take to Twitter to express their anger over the resurfaced clip
Realizing that the waitress’s weight had nothing to do with the story had fans on Twitter asking, “Why did she even say that?” Not necessary at all.”
Another said: “She didn’t need to mention her height, it had nothing to do with what she said.”
Another tweeted: “She didn’t need to add that and ALSO IFFFF it was important to the story…say literally anything except enormous anger.”
Another fan felt let down and added: “She let herself down with comments like that. ‘You can do better Emily!’
However, one fan seemed to stand up for the star as he pointed out that this clip was from over 10 years ago.
“That was an old story.” This happened in 2012 when she did this interview. All of you seriously, relax a bit. Emily probably doesn’t remember it at all now and has grown so much since then. “Stop digging up old dirt.”
Unnecessary: Fans pointed out that mentioning her weight was irrelevant to the story
