The 81st Golden Globe Awards
Not only did Emma Stone win a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy on Sunday night for her role in “Poor Things,” the quick-witted actress also won the award for Best Backstage Moment.
When a reporter in the press room asked what Stone thought of his longtime friend Taylor Swift cheers So loud for her in the audience, Stone sauntered up to the microphone and deadpanned, “What an asshole, am I right?”
After the laughter died down, Stone continued more seriously. “I have known her for almost 20 years and was very happy that she was there. She also got nominated tonight, which was wonderful and, yeah, what an asshole.”

Stone is on a roll this awards season, with an appearance that Rolling Stone calls “a showcase” for the actor. “[Stone] She quickly transitions from preverbal frolicking to childlike wonder to restless youth, all the while remaining a grown woman unaware of the chain reactions happening around her. Her performance shows the poise and skill of a chainsaw juggler.”
In a recent panel for , Stone revealed that she and the cast spent weeks preparing for the film in unusual ways. “You make games where you're all connected in some way. Real plays,” Stone said. “Everyone has to close their eyes and walk around, and one person is assigned to place a chair under them while they sit.” It's just completely silly. You embarrass yourself in front of each other and then get very close very quickly. So when you're on set you feel like you know each other really well and you can experiment and be free and make fun of each other. And it’s not an eggshell experience with your other actors, which is really, really helpful.”

At the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, director Yorgos Lanthimos discussed working with Stone on the strange, wild sex scenes in the Frankenstein-inspired film. “We had to be confident, and the character couldn't be ashamed, and Emma couldn't be ashamed of her body, her nudity and her participation in these scenes,” he said at the press conference. “She understood immediately. The great thing about me and Emma is that we've finished four films together now, so there's a shortcut. We can communicate without having to explain everything or talk about things too much.”
Lanthimos added: “Specifically for the sex scenes, we sat down with Emma and decided, 'What position are we taking here?' “What kind of thing is there?” 'What's missing?' “What experiences with sex and people's different desires do we need to portray in order to achieve a sufficient representation of human desire and its peculiarities?” It was important to all of us that this was a part of the film and that we didn't shy away from it. And sometimes it’s a lot of fun.”
