Emmerdale viewers expressed their sadness at the “vulnerable” Mary Goskirk after she spoke openly about her feelings on Monday’s episode.

Mary (Louise Jameson) was caught hiding behind a wall in a field by Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) in the last episode before talking about her ex-con Faye Helders.

She revealed she told daughter Rhona (Zoe Henry) that she had “gone on dates” and hid in her car instead.

Mary admitted that she keeps telling everyone she’s fine, but she’s also trying to convince herself that it’s true.

Fighting back tears, she said, “I told them and I won’t say a word.” I told them I had dates, and instead I’m hiding in my car.

“I always tell everyone I’m fine, I keep telling myself I’m fine.” “Faye broke something inside me.”

Mary reveals that she can’t speak to Marlon because she was in love with Faye, although she didn’t feel an answer to that.

She continued, “Until you propose, I can’t talk to Marlon about it.” I loved her (Faye) immediately and when I felt everything, she felt nothing.

“It felt so good to be with Faye and finally be myself and then she did what she did.” I can never put myself in that position again, I’m better off with a book alone .

Later in the episode, she insisted, “I’m not depressed.”

ITV viewers were quick to rush to Twitter to say they “feel sorry for Mary” and implored her to “ask her family for help” rather than go into hiding.

One wrote, “Don’t make Mary unhappy, she’s one of the few good things on the show.”

“Sorry Mary – #Emmerdale absolutely ruined a beautiful coming out story with this Faye cheating on Mary Angle,” wrote another.

A third said: “Mary – you should know more than anyone who lies.” You need to ask your family for help.

It comes after Faye blackmailed Mary into insisting she would send a photo taken without Mary’s consent unless Mary changes her statement against her.

After confiding in her daughter Rhona, Mary found out furiously that Rhona had told her husband Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) what was going on.

Rhona explained that she had no choice as Marlon was concerned. Rhona then offered to accompany her mother to the police station, as Mary had decided to follow Faye’s orders to preserve her own dignity.

But when Marlon’s daughter April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) claimed she wanted to be a journalist, just like Mary, who she saw as a superhero for exposing grievances, Mary was disappointed.

When Mary emerged from the police station later in the episode, she claimed her job was done as she planned to meet with Faye as agreed.

But when Faye was already convinced that Mary had given in to her demands, the plot was foiled when the police arrived at the scene.

Mary revealed she recorded their conversation and Faye was taken away screaming that Mary would regret it.

Mary was triumphant as she and Rhona headed to the Woolpack, where she explained that April had inspired her to stand up to Faye.

Though everyone was celebrating, the mood soon changed as the villagers’ phones, one by one, began to glow pink.

Mary was horrified when Faye finally passed the photo on to everyone she knew.
