Emmy nominations will spark celebration under cloud of strike

CNN –

The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 12 in what is expected to be a celebratory ceremony. Much attention is expected for acclaimed TV shows retiring during the selection period, including Succession, Better Call Saul and The Marvelous. Mrs. Maisel”, “Barry” and “Ted Lasso”.

However, a writers’ strike looms over the industry, raising doubts about what the Emmys might look like in September and whether Hollywood will be back up and running — or able to talk — by showtime. The guild representing the actors is in its own negotiations with the major studios and is lobbying for an extended deadline, which coincidentally coincides with the date of the nomination.

For now, the industry can focus on the details of the nomination, which promises to be a big year for HBO. In addition to the already mentioned “Succession” and “Barry”, his arsenal includes the new hits “The Last of Us” and “House of the Dragon” as well as the second part of “The White Lotus”, which competes this time with the series ( (as opposed to limited series) votes.

It’s just one of the categorization shifts that could mess up some of the results, as another HBO star, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” is moving into the scripted variety series group after seven straight wins as a variety talk series. That means the HBO show is taking on Saturday Night Live (itself holders of a six-year winning streak) while also freeing up the comedy talk circuit to likely honor one of the perennial nominees and followers, which includes Stephen Colbert , Jimmy Kimmel and Trevor Noah, who said goodbye to his late-night show along with James Corden.

John Oliver’s HBO show climbs into a new Emmy category this year after dominating the late-night competition.

With all the stellar finales and The Crown is back in the running – having won the drama awards on its main live broadcast in 2021, the last eligible season – the comedy seems like a better choice to launch up-and-coming talent to make a breakthrough.

In addition to the aforementioned comedies and ABC’s Abbott Elementary, potential rookies include Netflix’s Wednesday, FX/Hulu’s The Bear (for the first season, not the recently launched second), and Apple TV+’s Shrinking -Contenders to face off against two-time winner “Ted Lasso”.

As for the limited series, there’ll be plenty of killer competition again – literally in the case of fact-based streaming projects dedicated to serial killers (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “Black Bird”) and likely alongside “Beef “ by Netflix ” among the nominees.

Acting categories are also influenced by certain actors choosing to change the way Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin progress from supporting cast to leading cast in “Succession.”

Harrison Ford, on the other hand – who earned an Oscar nomination in 1986’s Witness in his successful film career – could bring his movie star credentials to two ends, starring in a drama for the Paramount+ western 1923. and his supporting role in Shrinking.

The Emmys have always been a source of pride for the industry, but they have a more practical side for streaming services that use the prestige that comes with honor recognition as a marketing incentive for their subscribers.

The participation period runs from June 1, 2022 to May 31. This year’s awards ceremonies are slated to air on Fox, although September 18 – traditionally chosen due to its proximity to the big broadcasters who open the official TV season – is traditionally chosen – as could almost anything else this year have to due to the writers’ strike – and possibly striking actor – to be marked with an asterisk.

Based on the nominations, we find out who’s in the running. After that, the prognosis becomes murkier as to when we’ll hear “And the Emmy goes to…”.

Television Academy will announce this year’s Emmy nominees live on Emmys.com on July 12 at 11:30 am ET. Like CNN, HBO is a unit of Warner Bros. Discovery.
